The Outfit Breakdown - Monochromatic Edit

You can always rely on a monochromatic look to achieve understated elegance with minimal effort. Timeless and classic, black and white pieces are essential to every wardrobe.

Each outfit is built off the same base, taking the hard work out of creating multiple outfits across the week. We rely on our capsule taylor essentials - pants, an Extension Tank and an option mesh layer.

essentials

Start with an Extension Tank and Undone Mesh Tunic. Add your favourite pair of pants - a pair like our go-to Raw Edge Uncover Jeans (straight cut), Overtune Pant (wide leg) or Integral Pant (skinny leg). You can easily swap an ivory pair out for black pants, interchanging each outfit. Simplifying an outfit allows you to focus on playing with textures and shapes to create depth and interest to your look.

When designing the collection, we always pull our base layers in. It’s important that any new styles we add still mix and match with the essential range seamlessly. The idea was to take the overwhelming feeling out of dressing. Think of our essentials like building blocks, they’re the full-proof investment pieces you can easily get away with wearing with every outfit.” - Vicki Taylor.

Let’s break down a few of our current favourite monochromatic outfits.

Offering a twist on the classic button-up, the Approach Shirt is quickly becoming a staple in our taylor wardrobe. Its relaxed shape and curved stepped hem flatter and enhance the silhouette. Crafted in a cupro-blend, giving a fluidity that a classic cotton shirt may not. To dress up or down, we've paired it with our unique take on denim - the Raw Edge Uncover Jean. Combining the best features of a comfortable pair of pants with the flattering look of a jean, these pants give you complete control over how you'd like to style them how you'd like - with sneakers for every day or a boot for a dressier occasion.

To finish the look, we're leaning on linear design details to elevate this from a simplistic black-and-white look. Every wardrobe needs a relaxed-fit coat. The Opportune Coat becomes the highlight of the look.

We all have a top in our wardrobes that we believe only fits in one category— 'work wardrobe', 'everyday', or 'casual weekends'. We're taking the Prospect Top away from the labels and styling it down with our Raw Edge Uncover Jean. Similarly to look one, you've gone from wearing this top during the week to transitioning it into your off-duty wardrobe.

The Diamond Mesh Undone Tunic peeks underneath. Designed with a longer hemline, you can tuck it in or layer it over your pants to add subtle texture to the look. You can also tailor the length to your shape with a raw edge.

Are you sticking to an all-black look but want to add some difference across the week? A monochromatic look doesn't always mean colour-blocking your whites and blacks. In Look 3, we subtly add a touch of white through the use of our essential mesh pieces. Under the asymmetric hemline of the Mercurial Top, the Sleeveless Mesh Contend plays with depth and adds a textural element against solid black pieces.

For simple everyday wear, stick to one garment with maximum impact. The highlight of a piece like the Refined Incursion Dress is the cocoon-shaped silhouette, making it perfect for layering or wearing on its own. To transition a sleeveless dress into the cooler months, we've layered the Diamond Mesh underneath, taking on the concept of look 3 whilst sticking to an all-black palette.

Knitwear is the perfect outfit topper year-round. For this look, we've paired the Illustrate Top in Black and White with the Uncover Jean in white, creating a beautiful contrast look. With a classic crew neck and a slightly stepped hem, this piece slims the silhouette and draws in the ivory of the Uncover Jeans. Crafted in a luxurious Merino Wool knit, this piece is incredibly soft to the touch and will keep you cosy all day and night. Throw the Extension Tank underneath for an extra pop of white around the neckline.

The Duple Vest is secretly versatile. Despite being sleeveless, it is a great layering piece, especially in winter. We're layering it over a taylor essential, an oversized white shirt like the Axle. For a classic look, wear the vest buttoned or play with the internal layers and ties. Playing with proportions, we like to style an oversized shirt shape with a slimmer pant, like the Overtune or Integral. Don't like a white shirt? Simply pop an Undone Tunic underneath for another classic taylor look.
