taylor artfully highlights the beauty of simple, long lasting, materials through sophisticated designs.
The boutique brand, established by designer Vicki Taylor in 1999, caters to the time-challenged woman, endeavouring to empower and elevate a sense of self through thoughtful design and unparalleled styling experiences.
taylor explores a contrasting of elements; where structure is juxtaposed with fluidity and each garment features unexpected details.
The striking yet practical designs allow the wearer to effortlessly create an individual style that complements their mood and personality. taylor sets an intellectual and intimate language, reflected in the carefully selected fabrics and textures. An emphasis on impeccable tailoring seduces the wearer with its fluidity.
taylor garments are superbly produced in unparalleled quality fabrications that are imported from leading European and Japanese mills. Our designs are manufactured in New Zealand wherever possible with incredible skill, attention to detail and dedication.
Vicki's aesthetic of infusing everyday garments with unexpected details and enduring quality is what has come to define her brand.
Part of what defines taylor is our passion for local design and manufacture: based in Eden Terrace, Auckland, we are designed in New Zealand and wherever possible we are proudly made in New Zealand. With every NZ made garment, it passes through 5 other talented New Zealand Manufacturers hands, keeping our local industry alive for the next generations.
Due to changes to our industry, and less availability of machinery and price driven requests by our clients, now days we have been pushed to produce some of our products offshore. These are still designed and sampled locally in our country, and then produced under the 'by taylor' brand. These garments have a silvery-grey label or a screen printed label that say 'by taylor' on them. We source these offshore factories carefully - please contact us for more information on this.
Allow us to invite you behind the scenes for a peek of our daily life… from our inspiring team of designers, to the talented machinists, finishers and pressers – all working their magic to bring our collections to life.
Concept, and European fabric sourcing feed into the design development process for Vicki and her design room team. Sketches, inspiration images and research all culminate in a range that will be brought to life through a series of phases, by a series of hands.
Patternmaker, designers and model come together for fitting sessions, ensuring a perfect cut. Machinists, graders, cutters and pressers – not to mention our own workroom team – all play their part in the exhaustive process of producing garments of superb quality. Let us walk you through...
Quality fabrication is paramount to taylor design, we therefore source most of our fabrications from leading mills across Italy and Japan. In securing international fabrics we ensure the exclusivity of our distinctive textiles, and with limited quantites available we make small runs of each style. Vicki travels to Europe herself to hand select stunning fabrications, and work direct with the mills so we know exactly where our fabrics and yarns originate from. We are so proud to say that two of our main fabric suppliers were present at the prestigious Lottozero Fabric Revolution Fair in Italy.
Our Patternmaker is the draughtsperson who brings our illustrations to life, crafting shapes from traditional card. Two-dimensional drawings are transformed into three-dimensional garments, another step closer to becoming treasured pieces in our wardrobes and yours.
Our makers are very skilled, and super fast at what they do - each specialising in different types of garment manufacture. We are proud to say many of our machinists and supporting companies have worked with us for the 19 years we have been in business!
With sampling complete, production can commence! The cutter is first in line, preparing those carefully selected fabrics for their evolution into real garments. If you are ever able to watch a cutter rolling the sharpest blade through a fabric lay with both speed and precision, you will understand the true talent and accuracy involved.
Our makers are specialists, many of whom have worked with us for more than 10 years. Scattered through the suburbs of Auckland, within driving distance of our Eden Terrace workroom many of these self-employed specialists work from home so we get to visit them frequently or they come to us to deliver our product, assuring an ethical product. Our makers are exceptionally skilled and super fast at what they do - each specialising in different types of garment manufacture
It takes many hours and many hands to put one taylor garment together; once it is thoughtfully designed and beautifully created, it is finally pressed to the highest quality. By purchasing just one of our taylor garments, you help keep 5-6 companies in business & their workers employed in our very own country.
We pride ourselves on being able to provide you with luxurious garments that you can trust to last a lifetime. Our team (quite literally) looks over each garment with a fine-tooth comb so we can rest easy in the knowledge that you are receiving the best.
We hope you have enjoyed this glimpse into the community behind taylor, where a sketch evolves over time into a beautiful garment to be treasured for many years to come. Hopefully you have gained an insight into why we love manufacturing locally, and why we are so committed to supporting our fabulous fashion industry in New Zealand!
